Live Edge Kitchen Islands & Counters

Live edge countertops and kitchen islands bring the natural shape, movement, and character of the tree directly into the kitchen. Every curve, grain pattern, knot, and edge becomes part of the design, creating a surface that feels warm, substantial, and unmistakably one of a kind.

Kitchen Island & Counter Design

Custom Layouts

Live edge tops can be designed for kitchen islands, seating overhangs, bar-height counters, peninsulas, serving areas, or feature sections within a larger kitchen. The live edge can face the seating side, the working side, or both, depending on how the island will be used and where the visual impact matters most.

Premium Wood Selection

Live edge counters and islands depend heavily on choosing the right slab. Ash, walnut, cherry, maple, elm, cedar, tulip poplar, and other hardwoods each bring their own color, grain, movement, and personality. Because we mill much of our own wood, we can work with larger slabs, unusual widths, and more custom dimensions, making it possible to create a kitchen island or countertop that feels naturally suited to the home.

Design Details

Natural cracks, knots, and voids can be stabilized with clear, black, or color-matched epoxy. The edge can be left highly organic, refined and softened, or paired with one straight edge where the design needs to meet cabinetry or walls. Additional options can include thicker tops, shaped ends, matching floating shelves, waterfall-style details, or subtle personalized engraving.

Functional Features

A live edge island can still be fully functional for daily kitchen use. Sink openings, faucet holes, cooktop cutouts, routed drainboards, overhangs for stools, appliance clearances, grommets, and other practical details can be integrated into the design while preserving the natural character of the slab.

Finish Options

For kitchen use, the finish needs to balance beauty, food safety, maintenance, and durability. Our preferred UV-light-cured hard wax oil enhances the natural look of the slab while creating a durable, food-safe surface that can be maintained and locally touched up over time. Epoxy flood coating and stains are also available when a project calls for a different level of sheen, color, or protection.
