Things to consider when choosing a dining room Table

There are myriad things to consider when choosing solid wood dining room tables, from the variety you choose to your preferred style and finish. You should always go for an option that best meets your needs and space when you’re in the market for a new table, as a finished one crafted from the right materials can last for decades.

Makers Woodshop has been creating long-lasting, durable finished tables for years. Our pieces are kiln-dried and expertly finished with top quality products such as Rubio Monocoat and epoxy, and made to last three generations or more.

Woods We Use to Make Our Tables

Although any type of wood can be used to make a table, our team knows the most important thing is that our clients choose an option that fits their current decor, overall home design vision, budget, and day-to-day needs.

Some of the available varieties include:

Walnut

Walnut is durable, making it ideal for furniture that will be placed in high-traffic areas. If you are looking for dining room tables that can stay in your family for generations, this is a good option.

Maple

Maple is also a tough wood type ideal for making heavy finished tables, dining sets, and other furniture. It is more affordable than other hardwoods, possesses enviable durability, and works well with wide color ranges.

Mahogany

Mahogany is one of the most popular materials for a range of furniture, including complex and intricate pieces. It boasts fine, straight grain and a timeless look, and will last for ages with proper care.

Birch

Birch is another strong, durable wood ideal for dining room tabletops. It comes with a beautiful appearance and blond colors that make it excellent for creating modern, stylish furniture. It also features elegant, clean line grains that come in handy when aiming for a simplistic interior design.

Oak

Oak typically takes ages to mature, which makes it exceptionally dense, robust, and durable — and ideal for both modern and traditional furniture. Its color can be light brown to pinkish-red and, with proper care, will last for generations.

Cherry

Cherry is typically straight with a uniform grain. If you are looking for a dining tabletop that polishes well, this material is a great option. It can also last for ages with proper care.

Bamboo

Bamboo boasts eco-friendly attributes and beautiful coloring, and is versatile and able to accommodate different kinds of designs. It’s also resistant to warping.

How We Create Our Timeless Tables

Every woodworking project starts with a conversation. We speak with our customers about what they need, their visions for the finished product, and any concerns they have about the project. We then undertake the following steps:

  • Once the material and design have been chosen, the lumber is cut according to the required specifications.
  • We build the uprights and connect extended support and legs.
  • We attach casters as necessary.
  • Our team creates the frame for the table top using top-of-the-line practices.
  • The tabletop is created and affixed to the frame.
  • We sand and stain the top and base using our customers’ predetermined stains.
  • We apply a finishing seal coat that will keep your table protected for years.

The process may seem straightforward, but the team at Makers Woodshop spends its time carefully undertaking every step to ensure you get only the highest quality results. Give us a call to speak with an expert about your table project today.

Common Products Used to Finish a Table

The right finish can make all the difference in a wood project. Without one, wood can dry, crack, and deteriorate when exposed to moisture and other elements. A table can be finished with a range of products depending on your preferred style. Some of the popular finishing products include:

  • Epoxy
  • Rubio monocoat
  • Linseed oil
  • Danish oils
  • Tung oil
  • Shellac and varnish
  • Polyurethane varnish
  • Lemon oil, mineral oil, or baby oil

When you’re ready for a custom-made table that you’ll love for generations, you want to work with top experts in the woodworking space to make it happen. At Makers Woodshop, our mission is to create beautiful, lasting items you’ll be proud to keep in your home and family for generations. This starts with sourcing — we secure our wood and mill it ourselves on our custom 8’x26′ bandsaw mill — and carries all the way through to long-term maintenance.

Our team is also environmentally conscious, and none of our wood material comes from trees cut down only for their lumber. Our raw materials are largely sourced from those that fell on their own or needed to come down for safety reasons, meaning you can feel good about the materials used to create your one-of-a-kind piece.
